The important photographer Takeji Iwamiya (1920-1985) is particularly known for his architectural, landscape, temple, and craft photographs. After his death over 30 years ago, the master photographer of the Shōwa era left behind an extensive image archive. From this, 421 works were selected for this retrospective.
As a young man, Iwamiya joined the "Tanpei Photography Club" in Osaka and learned the basics of photography. After serving on the Chinese mainland during the Pacific War, he returned to Osaka in 1945 and opened a photo studio. His atmospheric images and his special eye for detail made Iwamiya one of Japan's greatest post-war photographers. He is considered the first to truly recognize the inner beauty of Japanese culture after the devastation of the war. A beautiful and timeless book, a visual journey into the soul of Japan.
