The renowned photographer Takeji Iwamiya (1920–1985) is particularly known for his architectural, landscape, temple, and craft photography. After his death over 30 years ago, this master photographer of the Shōwa period left behind an extensive archive of images. For this retrospective, 421 works were selected from this archive.
As a young man, Iwamiya joined the Tanpei Photography Club in Osaka and learned the fundamentals of photography. After serving on the Chinese mainland during the Pacific War, he returned to Osaka in 1945 and opened a photography studio. His evocative images and exceptional eye for detail established Iwamiya as one of Japan's greatest postwar photographers. He is considered the first to truly recognize the inner beauty of Japanese culture after the devastation of war. A beautiful and timeless book, a visual journey into the soul of Japan.
