Shigeo Fukuda was an influential Japanese graphic designer and poster artist, particularly known for his concise posters against war and for environmental concerns. His clever designs with clear lines and repetitive motifs - an influence, by the way, stemming from the minimalism of Swiss typography - captivate with their sharpness and wit.
In Shigeo Fukuda’s obituary in the New York Times in 2009, Steven Heller described him as follows: Fukuda was an expert in communicating messages with minimal graphic elements. His economical style had universal validity, and his symbolism bridged cultural differences. Although his clients also included commercial ones, the majority of his work focused on social and cultural issues, such as the 1970 World Expo in Osaka, for which he designed the official poster.
