Shigeo Fukuda was an influential Japanese graphic designer and poster artist, particularly known for his concise anti-war and environmental posters. His clever designs, with their clean lines and repeating motifs—an influence, incidentally, derived from the minimalism of Swiss typography—captivate with their sharpness and wit.
In his 2009 obituary in The New York Times, Steven Heller described Fukuda as follows: Fukuda was an expert at communicating messages with minimal graphic elements. His economical style was universally applicable, and his symbolism bridged cultural differences. While his clients included commercial clients, the majority of his work focused on social and cultural causes, such as the 1970 World Exposition in Osaka, for which he designed the official poster.
