Japanese rice bowls, or chawan, are small and fit perfectly in the palm of the hand. One hand holds the rice bowl while the other maneuvers the chopsticks.

According to legend, a stray kitten named Shichita wandered into a minoyaki pottery workshop on July 7th and was subsequently given the name Shichita. The name Shichita is a play on words, another reading of Tanabata (七夕), the Star Festival, which is celebrated on July 7th.
