A masu is a traditional Japanese wooden vessel for serving sake. Originally, it served as a measuring cup for rice. It has a square shape and is usually made from Japanese cypress (Hinoki). When sake is drunk from a masu, it develops a delicate, refreshing, and woody aroma that enhances the drinking experience.
There are two ways to drink from it: Either the sake is poured directly into the masu, or a small glass is placed into the masu and filled with sake until it overflows – a symbol of generosity and hospitality.
Ohashi Ryoki has been the leading manufacturer of traditional, handcrafted masu vessels in Ōgaki for over 60 years. More than 80% of all masu come from this city, a significant center for Hinoki wood. Made from surplus wood from forest thinning, they are particularly sustainable.
