Painter and printmaker Kimura was born in Yokosuka in 1924 and initially studied philosophy in Tokyo with the intention of becoming an art critic. In 1964, he moved to New York City, where he established a studio and devoted himself entirely to printmaking, particularly screen printing. He gained renown with his series "Great Cities in the World" from the late 1960s, featuring abstract and colorful depictions of fictional cityscapes. He spent three years completing the series, which comprises over 400 images.
