Painter and print artist Kimura was born in Yokosuka in 1924 and first studied philosophy in Tokyo to become an art critic. In 1964, he moved to New York City, where he set up a studio and dedicated himself entirely to printmaking, especially screen printing. He gained fame with his "Great Cities in the World" series from the late 1960s, featuring abstract and colorful fictional cityscapes. He took three years to complete the series, which comprises over 400 images.
