The painter and printmaker Risaburo Kimura was born in Yokosuka, Japan, in 1924. He originally studied philosophy in Tokyo with the goal of becoming an art critic. However, his passion for creating his own art led him down a different path.

In 1964, Kimura moved to New York City, where he opened a studio and dedicated himself entirely to printmaking, particularly silkscreen printing. He gained international recognition with his series Great Cities in the World, created in the late 1960s. The series, comprising over 400 works, features abstract, colorful interpretations of fictional cityscapes and is considered one of his most significant creative periods. Kimura took approximately three years to complete it.
