These small plates, called mamezara (literally: "bean" or "pea plates"), are an important part of Japanese table culture and are used in a variety of ways: as dishes for soy sauce, dips, spices, and herbs; for small side dishes such as pickled vegetables; for small snacks and sweets, or even for butter and jam. Often designed with elaborate decorations in various colors and shapes, mamezara have also become a popular collector's item.
True to their motto "Art in Everyday Life," Amabro designs stylish everyday objects for modern living, using traditional Japanese elements as a basis and reinterpreting them or combining them with modern details. For the mamezara, modern, graphic designs are layered over traditional, classic patterns. A cool mix that brings Arita's 400-year-old porcelain tradition to the contemporary dining table.
