These small envelopes are produced using the traditional letterpress printing method. In this process, the motif is printed directly into the paper using a raised printing plate and a letterpress with high pressure. This creates a fine impression that gives the envelope its distinctive feel.
Because the ink is pressed directly into the paper, slight variations in texture and color intensity occur with each print – even when using the same color. As with stamping, one color is applied per printing pass.
Whether for special letters or as stylish packaging for a monetary gift for a joyous occasion – these envelopes add a personal and high-quality touch to small gestures.
The paper figures were created through a collaboration between the design studio Cochae, founded in 2003, and the long-established Onishi printing house, based in Bizen since 1920. Together, they manufacture paper products under the name Bito-Kō using traditional letterpress techniques.
The design duo Cochae, consisting of Yosuke Chikuhara and Miki Takeda from Okayama, creates products that surprise and delight while preserving the traditional culture of Japan. They engage deeply with the theme of "Design for Play" and use their unique design language to bring Japanese traditions into the 21st century.
