Kokeshi dolls are traditional wooden dolls from the Tōhoku region. They were produced from 1800 onwards in the hot spring regions of northeastern Japan and sold as souvenirs to onsen (hot spring) visitors. These highly stylized dolls are part of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and were popular toys in the 19th century, but were largely replaced by newer toys in the early 20th century. However, these charming dolls with their nostalgic appeal have been experiencing a revival for some time now.
The design duo Cochae, consisting of Yosuke Chikuhara and Miki Takeda from Okayama, creates products that surprise and delight while preserving traditional Japanese culture. They engage deeply with the concept of "Design for Play" and, with their unique design language, catapult Japanese traditions into the 21st century.
