Kiyoshi Awazu 粟津潔 | Exhibition Zurich, Art Front, 1982

Kiyoshi Awazu was self-taught and did not have a university education in art or design. Nevertheless, he carved out a place for himself in the top league of the design world. His oeuvre ranges from countless posters to book design, stage sets, film decoration, and exhibitions.
Awazu developed a unique, unmistakable style and drew upon historical symbols from Japanese visual culture. He avoided simplicity and clear forms, instead allowing viewers to enter fantastic, psychedelic worlds, permeated by expressive, surrealistic hand-drawn motifs. Awazu consciously rejected industrial commissions and dedicated his work to cultural events and political commentary.
