Kiyoshi Awazu 粟津潔 | Sky Sea West East

Kiyoshi Awazu was self-taught, he had no university education in art or design. Nevertheless, he fought his way into the top league of the design world. His oeuvre ranges from countless posters to book design, stage sets and film decoration, and exhibitions.
Awazu developed a unique, unmistakable style and made use of historical symbols from Japanese visual culture. He avoided simplicity and clear forms, allowing the viewer to enter fantastic, psychedelic worlds, permeated by expressive, surrealistic hand-drawn motifs. Awazu deliberately rejected industrial commissions and dedicated his work to cultural events and political commentary.
