Large, water-repellent, and reversible Furoshiki
Furoshiki are traditional Japanese square cloths used for wrapping and carrying a variety of items. Size L Furoshiki are suitable for tying bags, wrapping clothes, or packaging two wine bottles. The pattern is inspired by a knot: the overlapping lines symbolize lasting bonds between people.
Traditionally, printed textiles are usually dyed only on one side, while the reverse side remains slightly faded or unprinted. However, together with experienced artisans and the design studio Isa Monyo, Musubi has developed a technique for producing fully reversible Furoshiki with two differently designed sides. This is a significant technical challenge, especially with such thin fabrics, as colors often bleed unevenly and patterns become blurry. Achieving a clear design and balanced color effect on both sides is therefore considered a special artisanal achievement.
Thanks to the water-repellent coating (Aqua Drop), water beads off the cloth, protecting bags and luggage from sudden rain. The cloth can also be used as a seat cushion or tablecloth. If the water-repellent effect diminishes, it can be restored by ironing at a medium temperature.
Musubi is the main brand of Yamada-Sen'i, a company founded in Kyoto in 1937, and stands for modern Furoshiki. The name Musubi (結び) means 'to tie' or 'to connect' and refers to the art of tying as well as the connection between people, things, and tradition.
