Clifton Karhu was one of the most successful Western woodblock print artists of the postwar period to live and work in Japan. Despite his artistic talent and interest, the American of Finnish descent joined the military and was stationed on Kyushu from 1946 to 1948, where he came to know and love Japan. In 1952, he returned to Japan and initially worked as a missionary before embarking on his career as a successful printmaker. His works are characterized by his distinctive graphic style with bold lines and striking colors, capturing the beauty and subtlety of everyday landscapes.
