Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) | Kura (Storehouse)

Clifton Karhu is considered one of the most important Western woodblock print artists of the post-war period. The American, with Finnish roots, lived and worked in Japan for many years and significantly influenced contemporary woodblock print art. Although he showed artistic talent early on, he initially joined the military and was stationed on the island of Kyushu from 1946 to 1948. During this time, he discovered his fascination for Japan, which never left him.

In 1952, Karhu returned to Japan permanently. After an initial period as a missionary, he dedicated himself entirely to printmaking and developed into an internationally acclaimed woodblock print artist. His works are characterized by an unmistakable graphic style with striking lines, vibrant colors, and a particular ability to capture the beauty and atmosphere of everyday Japanese landscapes and street scenes.
