Sori Yanagi's Butterfly Stool is considered one of the most significant designs in Japanese furniture design. Its iconic design combines the innovative molded plywood technique of the post-war era with the simple elegance of Japanese aesthetics. The stool consists of two identical, curved plywood shells that are connected by two screws and a brass rod. The result is a piece of furniture with impressive lightness – sculptural, functional, and timeless.

Since its introduction in 1956, the Butterfly Stool has been manufactured by Tendo Mokko in Yamagata Prefecture. Since 2002, Vitra has also been a licensed manufacturer for the European market. To this day, the Butterfly Stool is considered a design classic and is represented in the collections of major museums worldwide.
