The colorful Masu series gives the traditional wooden cup a modern, pop look. Ideal for enjoying sake and equally ideal as a decorative element.
A Masu is a traditional Japanese wooden vessel for serving sake. Originally, it served as a measuring cup for rice. It has a square shape and is usually made from Japanese cypress (Hinoki). When drunk from a Masu, the sake develops a fine, refreshing, and woody aroma that enhances the drinking experience.
There are two ways to drink from it: Either the sake is poured directly into the Masu, or a small glass is placed inside the Masu and filled with sake until it overflows – a symbol of generosity and hospitality.
For over 60 years, Ohashi Ryoki has been the leading manufacturer of traditional, handmade Masu vessels in Ōgaki. More than 80% of all Masu come from this city, a significant center for Hinoki wood. Made from excess wood from forest thinning, they are particularly sustainable.
