100 Years of Samiro Yunoki not only brings together the work of the dyer, textile designer, artist, and art professor Samiro Yunoki (born 1922), but also explores his multifaceted talents and creative activities as a lecturer at Joshibi University of Art and Design. The exhibition presents approximately 150 works, including stenciled and other dyed textiles, stained glass, and book covers from the 1950s to the 2000s; artworks for the Ace Hotel Kyoto (opened in 2020); and designs created in collaboration with the interior design brand Idée. The now centenarian Yunoki began studying art history at Tokyo Imperial University in 1942. Impressed by the works of the Katazome master Keisuke Serizawa, he joined the Mingei movement, led by Soetsu Yanagi, which aimed to revive traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Even at one hundred years old, Yunoki still creates art and continues to inspire generations.
